Friday Five -- favorite foods, in groups

It's Friday and I'm in a mood for food! So come play:

What is your favorite food from each food group?
1. Bread (Grain) Group:
2. Meat (Protein) Group:
3. Vegetable Group:
4. Fruit Group:
5. Sugars, Fats and Oils:

1. German Brötchen. They are bread rolls akin to French bread, but much tastier, in my opinion. Especially when nice and fresh. The outside can sometimes be a bit chewy, but the inside is soft and yummy and melts in your mouth. It's a breakfast staple in Germany, and can be eaten with honey or marmalade or cheese or slices of meat (salami is my favorite).

2. At the moment, corned beef. It has a tendency to be too salty, so Allan takes care of it by doing two things: First he rinses it thoroughly, and then he fills the slow cooker with water and lets the meat simmer there for 6-8 hours. Most of the salt winds up in the water. Get rid of this briny water and voila! A flavorful but not-too-salty hunk of meat! It's also very very tender and all but falls apart under your fork :-9

3. I generally like most veggies. If I had to pick one favorite, I'd pick Napa cabbage. I looooove the taste of cut-up pieces of Napa cabbage stir-fried with a dash of soy sauce and a sprinkling of black pepper :-9

4. I think most people who are reading this know this one. STRAWBERRIES!! Om nom nom nom nom...

5. Well, you can never go wrong with chocolate, so long as it's Swiss or Belgian, none of that crappy American stuff X-P Another favorite of mine is chalk-like candy that's basically nothing but sugar and a bit of coloring. Most notably: Smarties (American name), aka Rockets (in Canada) or Fizzers (in the UK). Finally, there's red licorice. Can't stand black licorice, but I love Red Vines, especially stale ones! Oh, and despite my aversion to spicy foods, I can never seem to get enough of Lay's Flamin' Hot potato chips!

Don't you love how my answer to the junk food question, #5, contained more items than any of the others? ;-) So hard to pick a favorite when it comes to junk food!

How about you?

  1. 1. Bread (Grain) Group: I'm not a very adventurous bread eater. I mostly just stick to the whole wheats and multi-grains. I do like a good foccacia bread though, but they are too damned expensive for me to buy them from our bakery very often! (The garlic and tomato basil ones are my favorite.)

    2. Meat (Protein) Group: I'm not a big meat eater. I don't eat much in the way of steak, pork, or anything like that. What I DO eat a ton of, however, is chicken. You can never go wrong with chicken, just make sure it's fully cooked as 100% of uncooked chickens are infected with campylobacter bacteria and WILL cause extreme illness and death if not cooked properly!

    3. Vegetable Group: I have three favorites, really, that I eat 10 times more of than any other. Asparagus, Michigan green beans that are only available from july til about october, and the simple carrot. I've loved carrots as long as I can remember!

    4. Fruit Group: Believe it or not, there are only a handful of fruits that I actually like. Most of them are far too tart or far too sweet for my liking. I like banana's, they are mostly flavorless, as are red delicious apples, and, on very special occasions, pineapple. Again though, if the pineapple is too sweet, I can't eat it.

    5. Sugars, Fats and Oils: Hehe, this list will go on forever if I start typing. Let's just put my two favorite junk foods on here and leave it at that. Ruffles original style potato chips--they are so greasy and salty that the chips are translucent, mmm MMM! My other favorite junk food is ice cream. Vanilla with fudge stripes is my favorite. :)

  2. Oooh these are gonna be hard to answer - especially 'cause I'm hungry!

    1. My answer is a three-way tie (I have a feeling this might continue) between pumpernickel, cornbread, and egg braid bread. All are so good for different reasons. Pumpernickel is delicious with strawberry jam in the morning, cornbread is perfect with a hot bowl of soup, and a sandwich made on egg bread is so satisfying.

    2. Like Scot, I have to go with chicken. I don't eat much red meat or pork, and when I do there are far fewer ways I enjoy them prepared as compared to chicken. My favourite chicken dish is a slow-cooked Indonesian sweet chili and peanut chicken. Sounds strange, I know, but yummers.

    3. One of my favourite salads has napa cabbage in it, but I had no clue it was stir-fry-able! Interesting.
I prefer vegetables to fruit so I'm not too picky when it comes to them. Sweet potatoes would be my answer, with beets a close second. Lately I've been on a real avocado kick though... wait, is an avocado a fruit?? The pit makes it one, right? Wow, I had never thought of this. Is it normal to associate it with vegetables? I'm intrigued!

    4. Mangoes are my favourite, but I probably eat apples or slightly under-ripe bananas most. Fresh from the farm peaches in the summer are also to die for. That reminds me - corn on the cob for the veggie question too!!

    5. This is nearly impossible to narrow down. I'm gonna keep it broad and say ice cream, just because of the inherent variety and my lifelong love affair with it.

I think I'm going to sneak a little snack before dinner. ;)

Are Michigan green beans different from regular green beans?

LOL, I have the opposite reaction to pineapple-- if it's sweet, I'll gobble it up, but if it's too tart I won't be as enthusiastic about it.

Hehe, and I had no clue that napa cabbage could be eaten raw ;-)

I've always associated avocados with fruit because I grew up eating them sweet-- with milk and sugar. Maybe it's an Asian thing? Only when I grew up did I start noticing avocado slices in salads, which made me wrinkle my nose a bit.

There's also guacamole... so yeah, I'd be curious too, to find out if it's common to associate avocados with veggies.

Then there's tomatoes and the fruit/veggie confusion over those... ;-)

I put them in sandwiches, so I suppose that's treating them more veggie-like. And I realized that they're distinctly in the vegetable section of my local grocery store's produce department. Scot, what's your take on this??

  6. I'm sure there's no real difference in green beans from other parts of the country, but the simple fact is that I only like them when they are local, LOL. Been that way since I was a kid, I only eat fresh green beans in the summer. And trust me, the quality of the beans is 10000% better than, say, in the middle of January.

The avocado IS classified as a fruit, but 99% of produce departments carry them in their vegetable sections, usually near the tomatoes, which are ALSO classified as fruit, but are almost always mixed in with the veggies like cukes, peppers, and lettuces.

I think you should just call it whatever you want to, because what difference does it make if you like it? LOL

Haha, it was clear that "Danielle" knew Scot, so I was wondering which of Scot's friends had wandered over to my blog! ;-)

As I alluded to in my earlier comment, I'm not normally a fan of avocados in things that are supposed to be "salty", like sammiches and salads, but just a few weeks ago I ate a vegetarian sandwich that had avocado in it, and it was GOOOOOD. I think the ripeness had something to do with it, but I'm starting to change my tune on the whole "only sweet" attitude about avocados...

I know what you mean about the green beans. I feel the same way about strawberries. Strawberry season is nearly upon us (the local strawberry festival usually falls around my birthday), and I'm looking forward to sweet, red, ripe, juicy (and cheap!) strawberries appearing in my local supermarkets soon :-D
