Been a while since I've done one of these. Today's subject? Books and reading!
1. Do you enjoy reading?
2. What is the first book you remember reading?
3. Who is your favourite author?
4. What is your favourite book?
5. What is the last book you read and the first you'll read next?
1. Of course. Nothing beats curling up on a nice comfy bed or sofa with a cup of hot tea in one hand and a good book in the other. Especially on cold nights, wrapped up in a warm blankie.
2. In Germany there are these little children's books, about 10cm x 10cm, called Pixi books. I think they had something similar (spelled "Pixie") in Canada and the UK. An example: http://www.pixibuch.de/katalog_0024.html I had several of these, and remember enjoying reading the little stories, most about animals. In fact, when I went to Germany twice as an adult, I picked up several of the newere ones for Todd. I don't know if it counts as "reading" per se, because most of the time, I was simply reciting from memory from the countless times my mom read the stories to me. If you're talking truly reading, then one of my earliest memories is "Charlotte's Web". I loved it so much my first-grade teacher let me have her copy, and even signed it for me :-)
3. For fiction, I enjoy Amy Tan, John Grisham and Michael Crichton. For non-fiction, I'd have to say C.S. Lewis.
4. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. The movie is equally good. Surprising, considering most movies adapted from books don't stick well to the original story. Close runner up is the "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. They say books transport you to different times and different worlds, and I still have fond memories of feeling like I was out in the pioneer West with the Ingalls family, watching everything unfold.
5. Blargh, it's been a while since I finished a book, though I try to read every night. Last one was "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis. Fascinating read! Next up? Well, I'm multitasking, so it's several at once (and may also explain why it takes so long to finish a single book :-P) One is "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis. Another is "The Case for Christ" by former atheist journalist Lee Strobel. And since it's the start of a brand new year, it's the perfect time to adhere to one of those "read the Bible in one year" plans, since I've only ever read it piecemeal before. I'm already a few days behind :-/
How about you?
1. Very much so. Being in school can dampen my enjoyment since most often the reading I do is not for pleasure, but it almost makes savouring a novel nicer when I get the chance.
ReplyDelete2. It's hard for me to pinpoint a memory but I know the Peter Rabbit family of stories were an early favourite of mine. Those Pixie books look familiar... are they the same as "Little Golden Books" maybe - http://www.randomhouse.com/golden/lgb/ ? In any case, I remember these as well. I found a cool site where you can read a few really old ones - http://www.antiquebooks.net/readpage.html#golden
3. This is tough! I will try to restrain myself and make a short list: David Sedaris, Ray Bradbury, Miriam Toews, John Irving, and Roald Dahl.
4. Again this is nearly impossible for me to answer. I rarely reread books, but for some reason A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is one I can, so maybe that is indicative of something.
5. I just finished Words the Dog Knows by J.R. Carpenter, which was a gift I got for Christmas. It was a nice little read and is already circulating through my family. The next book I plan to read (for leisure) isn't exactly a book, but is something I got for Christmas as well. It's hard to explain, but it's sort of a journal/scrapbook concept that illustrates issues refugees face in four different countries: http://www.amazon.com/I-Live-Here-Mia-Kirshner/dp/0375424784/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231603257&sr=8-1
Happy weekend!
1. Do you enjoy reading? Yes!!
ReplyDelete2. What is the first book you remember reading? I'm with Jenna on this one, as I fondly remember a vast number of the "little golden books" being my first reads as a child. That, and Garfield. :)
3. Who is your favourite author? Dean Koontz, Dan Brown, James Patterson, Sebastian Junger, Chuck Palahniuk, Bret Easton Ellis...this list will get rather lengthy if I don't stop now, lol.
4. What is your favourite book? The Stand by Stephen King, followed closely by Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk and The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis.
5. What is the last book you read and the first you'll read next? I last finished some old thing by John Grisham for escapism--I have nothing lined up on my "must-read" list at the moment. Next time I hit the library I'm sure I'll find something!

ReplyDelete2. Not quite the same. Little Golden Books are normal sized books, the Pixis were only about 4 x 4 inches, typically 24 pages long. There IS some overlap in content in the English-version books, I think.
5. Looks interesting! Almost Anne Frank-like!

ReplyDeleteDean Koontz! Another favorite of mine. He's been responsible for many a late night when I was in college. He writes such good books on levitation, doesn't he! ;-)
