As many of you know, late Sunday night my parents and I will be flying out of LAX and heading toward Indonesia to spend several days visiting my grandparents (my dad's parents) and other relatives I've never seen before. It's going to be interesting-- 14 hour flight (taking off at 1:30 in the morning), 12-hour layover in Taiwan, and then another several hours' flight to Indonesia.
I'm looking forward to it! I've never been to Asia before-- the longest haul trip I've ever made has been to Europe. And I've only recently tried Indonesian food-- my parents took me to an Indonesian restaurant in LA a few weeks ago, so I could get a taste for what it was like, and mmmmmm... delicious!
Couple weeks ago I scrambled to get all my vaccinations up to date. That was an adventure all on its own :-P All that remains (besides the obvious cleaning up and packing) is to get some insect repellent. Mosquitoes? Which fly rampant in the hot and humid climate? Not something I'm looking forward too :-P I've also got my anti-malarial medication onhand. It also serves as a general-purpose antibiotic, which might come in handy to ward off any bugs I might catch along the way. Recycled airplane cabin air = yucky!
We return on the evening of Wednesday, the 22nd. Given a day or two to get over jet lag, I should be back and ready to go by the following weekend. In other words, I'll be offline, and I mean completely offline, for the next 2 weeks. Let's see what withdrawals symptoms I undergo!
Wish us a safe and uneventful flight/trip. And wish Allan lots of luck and support as he takes on the next 2 weeks, playing "single dad" all by himself :-D See you in a couple weeks!
Be safe and healthy, have a blast, and take tons of pictures! I can't wait to hear all about it.
ReplyDeleteHang in there, Allan.

ReplyDeleteThanks :-) I'll be sure to pester my dad to keep the supply of camera batteries well-stocked.
And I'm thinking of bringing along a small notebook so I can jot down notes-- offline blogging in the truest sense. Oh wait, I think that IS the original form of "journaling", long before the Internet came around ;-)
Hope you have a really wonderful trip. Your folks must really be looking forward to this. Bet they wish they had the little man to show off too. Your Mom really deserves a great trip after all she's been through in the last couple years.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Todd will have Allan wrapped around his little (cute) finger. Good luck Todd.

ReplyDeleteHee-- no luck for Allan, just Todd, eh? ;-) That's what Grandmas are for :-D
It's too bad he's a little too young to travel that far, but I'm sure we'll be making another trip out there again someday, when he's older.
Safe trip Helly. I can't wait to see all the pictures when you get back!

ReplyDeleteIndeed! The news had even reached Indonesia by the time the fire spread!
Everything was just fine when we got home-- tons of ash and dust everywhere, so cleaning up was a chore, but no fire or smoke damage, thank God!
