Happy Halloween (and Friday Five)

Wow, October's almost over. This year has flown by fast. I'm sitting at my desk wearing a puffy orange jacket with Allan's orange tank top over it. On the tank top are black pieces of paper cut out in the shape of a jack-o-lantern, complete with a π-symbol nose and a headband with stem and leaves... and "3.14159" written on each leaf. Yup, I decided to go with my Pumpkin Pi(e) costume. Allan donned the gifts I brought him from Indonesia-- Hawaiian shirt and long sarong, even his new wallet matches! It was hilarious to see him shuffle along, unable to take the long strides he normally does due to the confines of the wrapped sarong :-D

Pictures forthcoming-- check back for updates!
EDIT: As usual, I'm way too lazy to crop and edit and upload a photo, but I've posted them (at long last!) to Myspace and Facebook. I think all of my readers have an account on one or the other (or both), so you should be able to view the pics there :-)

In the meantime, here's today's Halloween-themed Friday Five:

1. What is your favorite scary movie?
2. What is your favorite Halloween treat?
3. Do you enjoy going to haunted houses or other spooky events?
4. How did you celebrate this time of year when you were a child?
5. How about now/this year?

1. I don't, as a rule, like horror films, but I did enjoy "The Ring". And if they count, all those "Scary Movie" spoofs were pretty funny!

2. Tootsie Rolls!

3. Not really. See #1. I don't really like having my heart leap out of its chest... in a situation I knowingly placed myself in! I leave those for the brave of heart :)

4. My mom would make me a costume (or I'd whip one together based on my own weird imagination-- one time I dressed up as a "clown magician"-- I wore a starry cape, put red circles on my cheeks and nose with my mom's lipstick, and carried around a magic wand and a mini pumpkin) and I'd go trick-or-treating with my friends around the neighborhood. Pretty simple, pretty standard :-)

5. Let's see-- Todd gets a harvest party at school today, Allan and I are simply wearing our costumes to work (I hear there's candy around here!) and our apartment complex is holding a Halloween pizza party this evening, where all 3 of us will go, have fun, and return home in time to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. And then... we feast on our candy goodies :-9

How about you?

  1. 1. What is your favorite scary movie?

It's hard for me to pick just one. So, here are my top FIVE, in no particular order, LOL. The original Halloween, the first Nightmare on Elm Street (the first films in these series are traditionally masterpieces of terror, with each subsequent installment being less and less scary and more and more laughable), What Lies Beneath (despite the fact I've seen it 25 or so times, it still creeps me out, especially in the first hour when all the spooky ghosty stuff is going on in the house), The Descent (a masterpiece of dark, claustrophobic terror), and Showgirls. Truly terrifying! ;~)

    2. What is your favorite Halloween treat?

Nothing that isn't available year round anyway, though I am partial to the little miniature sized Krackle bars in the Hershy's mixed bag.

    3. Do you enjoy going to haunted houses or other spooky events?

I used to when I was a teenager, and even into my 20's I still went and had a blast with my friends, but now I don't have the friend capacity NOR the funds to really go and enjoy them, as they have gotten VERY expensive in the last 5 years.

    4. How did you celebrate this time of year when you were a child?

The standard get-a-costume-and-go-out-trick-or-treating routine. However, I remember the trick or treating hours being much, uh, LONGER when I was a kid. We'd be out til 9 or 10 p.m. sometimes, without a worry in the world, but it seems the times get shorter and earlier for kids every year now. This year it's only from 4-5 p.m. in Stevensville! And in St Joe, my neighboring town, it was YESTERDAY!

    5. How about now/this year?
I don't do a thing now---if I work, I go to work as usual, if not, I stay at home and relax, as usual. It's just another day.

  2. I can't wait for pictures!! :D

    1. I don't really like typical horror movies because I think they're silly, so I'm gonna say Silence of the Lambs.

    2. I'm with Scot. My favourite (Reese's peanut butter cups) is not Halloween specific and it's not even "fun sized" at Halloween lol. I do like to nibble a few candy corns though. (By the way, I've been thinking of Abby today with her love of candy corn. Remember?)

    3. NO. Traumatized as a child by haunted houses and haunted hayrides.

    4. My mom would make a costume or put together something unique (I am famous in my family for my firefighter costume). I would trick-or-treat with all the similar aged kids in the neighbourhood. Standard fare for me too.

    5. I decided not to go out this year. Writing two papers has taken all the wind out of me and I can't be bothered. I just carved my pumpkin though and will hand out some candy. It's starting to get dark just now!

    Happy Halloween!

Hehe, I wondered if you'd have trouble answering #1 for the exact reason you did ;-) But... Showgirls!?

What-- the city actually SETS trick-or-treating hours!?

I am munching on candy corns right now (we had to go on a little "treasure hunt" to find the stash here at work) and you're right-- as soon as I saw them I thought of Abby. Actually, earlier than that, I perused my old Grab blog because I recall having done a Halloween-themed Friday Five there a few years ago... and when I found it, I saw that she'd commented and answered the favorite candy question not with a straight "candy corns" but with a funny "calorie-free" ;-) I also remember her scoring 100% on that candy corn quiz I posted another year.

What exactly does a haunted hayride consist of?

When I was little I used to have fun carving pumpkins with my dad. Now... too much work ;-) I'm terrible at it by myself, anyway.

I might go get some when they're on sale, hehe.

A haunted hayride is hayride where ghosts, and werewolves, and vampires are out in the field. Sometimes you can just see them in the distance, but some of them chase the carriage and hop in with you. Needless to say I only went once. No caramel apple could make it worth it.

    This is my pumpkin!!

OMG, that sounds scarier than a haunted house! At least in a house you have some control over where you go, and can step away from what jumps out at you.

What a cool pumpkin! I can barely carve out the traditional triangle-hole eyes and nose, let alone anything more elaborate. How long did it take you?

    I know!

Hehe. I'm kind of a dork about pumpkin carving. I love it. I found that idea online though, but I added the boo! It took me about 45 minutes.

  8. yay friday five Saturday @ noooon!

    1. What is your favorite scary movie?

    Edward Scissorhands!

    2. What is your favorite Halloween treat?

PUMPKIN EVERYTHING! This is when pumpkins start ripening...Starbucks has more of PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE!

    3. Do you enjoy going to haunted houses or other spooky events?

YES! Scares the shivers into me! But gory is just gross...I like a good ol'fashioned BOO!

    4. How did you celebrate this time of year when you were a child?

Actually...it was confusing! We don't celebrate, but lived in a house where trick or treaters would come. I always wanted to see the costumes...cause I LOVE COSTUMES! But have never wanted to go door to door...too cold to ICKY! I really just wanna wear a chicken costume to the mall, so one day I will rent one and DO IT! And it would be greater for it to be unexpected. heeee!

    5. How about now/this year?

This year...the morning was crazy...then I had to go work...then I spent some calming time talking to my Gramma on my dads side..then I felt insane so I called my Gramma on my moms side....then I took my brothers girlfriend home...and felt BETTER. THEN! I actually had a nice quiet evening with Calvin Mazey and Rocky, and I spent some quiet time away from THE INTERNET doing some personal time on my laptop with some reading. And I told my husband a secret.

Oh come on now, have you SEEN Showgirls? LMAO! It's frightening, for very DIFFERENT reasons than your typical horror film. It always gets a laugh out of people when I include that in a scary movie list.

And yes, they set trick or treating hours now, kids get one hour, in the daylight, here in Michigan, though the times and days alternate from town to town. Fantastic fun, no?

    *snort* so true, so true!

The first five minutes of "The Ring?" With the two blonde bimbos chattering endlessly about inane subjects in authentic Valley-girl-speak? Truly terrifying. I kid you not.

I can't believe the state actually sets a curfew! Are they really allowed to do that? Way to dampen the fun.
