How long...

... does it typically take for food poisoning to set in?

I got into work at 9am, and since it's Bagel Wednesday, I made a beeline for the kitchen and got my usual-- half a chocolate chip bagel with 1/3 blueberry, 1/3 strawberry and 1/3 honey-walnut cream cheeses smeared on it. Went up to my cube and wolfed it down.

10am, I headed for a daily meeting, rubbing my tummy because it started feeling a little gassy. I didn't even think of food-related causes until I stepped in the meeting room, and one observant colleague, upon noting the tummy-rub, noted: "Uh oh. Bad bagels?" Another pointed out that if anything was bad, it was more likely the cream cheese.

Cue to 10:45, and I'm doubled over at my desk, trying to keep from grimacing too much because I'm wrapping up a one-on-one meeting with another colleague, rifling through code on my computer. And I don't want him to think it's our meeting that's causing pain :-P

So... we're talking an hour, hour and a half. If indeed the cream cheese was the culprit, would this really be sufficient time for it to take effect? Can't think of any other reason-- I had nothing else to eat this morning, and I was fine until an hour after I ate. Haven't had too many bouts (if any) with food poisoning, mild or otherwise, so... what have your experiences been?

Beware the Bagels!

  1. In the last month, I've had two really bad bouts of what I assume were food poisioning and both times it involved the frozen baglefuls. The first time was the worst, both ends and the second time was no picinic either. One happened several hours after eating and the second one waited until the next morning. Good luck and I hope you feel better real soon. Oh, yeah, yes I think it was the cream cheese. I don't want anything to do with bagels and cream cheese for some time.

  2. oh nooo, that sounds awful! Was the cream cheese kept cold? Otherwise the bagles had mold on them. SOmetimes you cannot even see this mold (faint white fuzz..but you can't see the beginning of it) and that makes people very ill. Food poisoining starts immediatly to 48 hrs after you have eaten. How much of the cream cheese did you eat? That will eaqul how sick you will be! (poor Helly)!!

Yup, it was cold, but who knows how fresh it was, or if it sat out unrefrigerated before it was re-refrigerated, or...!

I hadn't thought about moldy bagels, but it's entirely possible!

Fortunately, whatever it was, it was very very mild, one rushed trip to the bathroom and all was better :-)

  4. I hope you're feeling much better by now! Your multi-cream-cheesed bagel sounds crazy. Maybe the breakfast gods were trying to tell you to take it easy, hehe.

Hehe, that's what I get for being undecided-- so many yummy varieties of cream cheeses, but only so much bagel I can handle!

Allan pointed out that perhaps it was more of a reaction much like that of lactose-intolerant people. I'm not, myself, but a lot of my family is (as are most Asians in general), so perhaps I'm just more sensitive to dairy than most people. Not something that's really happened before, but things change as you get older, right?

I'm definitely back to normal now :)

    Thanks :)

Sorry to hear you had some awful bagel experiences yourself! Sick tummies are never any fun :(
