Anti-theft devices?

Went shopping after work today. Came home with a new bathing suit from K-Mart. Great deal, clearance sale-- it's almost the end of summer, after all.

I get home to try it on again and model it for Allan. To my surprise, what do you suppose was still affixed to one of the straps? That big, bulky plastic security device. You know, the ones that can only be removed by special removers at the checkout stand, that burst and spray indelible ink if you try to force it off yourself, and that set off alarms if you try to walk out of the store with them?

Yeah... nice little surprise, considering there were no alarms to be heard when we left the store.

Kinda defeats the purpose, eh?

  1. The store I used to work at had those censors on the clothing too, even though we don't have the alarm system for it... but we're a small (chain of) stores and not K-mart, heh :)

  2. This has happened to me before too! They could not wrap their heads around it when I came back to the store to get them to remove it.

So it's kinda like those dummy security cameras which look like real cameras and are mounted on the walls? ;-)

I dreamt last night that I tried to go in to get it removed, and the dream reactions were pretty much as you described-- puzzled looks of "WTF?" Let's see how I fare tonight, when I drop by the store for real!

  5. Well, I just came back from K-Mart. Wouldn't you know it-- as soon as I walked in the door, the alarms went off!!

So either they temporarily weren't working when we left the store last night, or we were so engrossed in conversation that I never heard them-- not like they were blaringly loud.

The woman at the service desk was pretty nonchalant about removing the tag-- simply asked for my receipt, and I was soon on my way.

Can't wait to break in the new bathing suit when I go swimming tomorrow :-)

  6. Back when there were still K-marts around here (wal-mart absolutely buried them when they opened their superstore here), they were notorious for exactly the same thing. On a number of occasions, I had to return merchandise to the store that still had the tag on it, but did not set off the alarms when I walked through them. Once, I had paid for all of my purchases and actually DID set off the alarm as I was leaving, and the store security guy nabbed me like I was walking out with precious jewels. I showed him my receipt and my purchases and we discovered the ONE item, a shirt, that had the tag was indeed the culprit and it was totally the cashiers fault--and even after ALL of that, not ONE person in that store had the common decency to apologize to me. Isn't retail great? LOL

The retail horror stories go both ways, don't they. It's like a vicious cycle!

I know you sometimes read the "mock the stupid" LJ community-- have you ever read "customers suck"? I'll bet you could really relate to some of their stories!

p.s. I'm STILL waiting for a Wal-Mart (heck, I'll settle for a Target!) here in these parts. K-Mart is the only "discount" store we have. Someday....
