I've never been much for that sort of extravagance-- the word "therapy" is probably the most amusing euphemism I've ever heard to downplay flagrant shopping sprees. My idea of "splurging" is most people's idea of normal shopping. Still, I get the euphoria that comes with treating yourself to something nice. I just don't think you have to shell out of lots of dough to accomplish that. Therefore, Wal-mart and the dollar store are my playground. Some would call me cheap, but when it comes to the important things, I'll spend wisely. Everything else is just a nice-to-have instead of a real need.
This week has been a week of splurging, Helly-style :-)
It began with an upgrade to my phone. It's been nearly 3 years since I upgraded from a standard Samsung bar phone to my beloved RAZR phone with the dragon tattoo. Yesterday the UPS guy delivered by brand-new T-Mobile (HTC) Shadow. It's amazingly lightweight and, in closed form, not much bulkier than my ultra-slim RAZR. It cost me $50, so I figured this was my Christmas gift to myself :-)

Last night I went to K-Mart with Todd and treated myself to a pair of nice, soft, fleece pajamas (last week they were 40% off, this week it was 50% :-D) to help keep me warm in this cold weather. The apartment can turn into an icebox at night and I knew it was time for something warmer when I woke up one morning, wearing flannel pajamas and snuggled deep under a thick comforter... shivering! I'm looking forward to snuggling in my new fleece pj's tonight!

I also got a bottle of Garnier Fructis leave-in conditioner. Normally I don't fuss much with hair products, and care even less about brand names, but with my trying to grow out my bangs and grow out a haircut (note to self: Helly cannot wear layers well!) I figured I needed a little help. And it's still cheaper than going to a salon! My hair's unruly, but it's not really in such bad shape.

I'm having fun with all of my new purchases, and yet they are all still practical things. I suppose retail therapy has its uses... and can be very enjoyable, when partaken of in moderation! :-)
Oh, shopping. I love it and I loathe it. Anyway, like you, I think I tend more toward the conservative end of splurging, at least compared to a lot of my friends. But I must confess that my splurging is a leeeettle bit more splurgy than yours. :-P
ReplyDeleteI'm the exact same when it comes to "retail therapy." I'm easy to please, which works out for everyone! ;)
ReplyDeleteDid you get them to texturize your hair with thinning shears or just regular layers? Every time some hairdresser looking to lose her tip has whipped out those texturizing scissors on me, my hair has looked so wispy and thin - so I'm wondering if that might actually work for you.
They typically use the thinning shears, and it DOES work pretty well-- provided the hairdresser isn't too timid to use it extensively on my hair ;-) Last time I got my hair cut, I had layers done on top of the thinning, which looked nice... for about a month. Since the thinned hair is taken from the bottom of my head, the layers rested nicely on it while that excess hair was gone. But when that thinned-out hair grew back, it caused the layers to puff up and look really bad. To her credit, the stylist did warn me that layers + thinning was a bad combination, but went ahead with it when I asked for layers after she finished the thinning. I'm willing to give her a try again, though.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, I've been using Pantene conditioner, and wow, what a difference that makes! I can finally use a *comb* on my hair again!
Even regular layers on their own can look awkward and messy as they grow out, so I can only imagine the added complication of the thinned sections growing in. That's funny, I've also recently found my dream shampoo, that I bought on a whim as a treat and now I'm hooked. It's a shame it's pricey. =/
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can see some of the unruliness in the B&W holiday party pics from a previous post-- you can (almost-- kind of hard to make out against the black sweater vest) see that my hair is longer than my shoulders, but some wisps (the layers) curl upward and away from my face, right at shoulder level. And that's WITH the hair tamed with leave-in stuff! It can look a lot worse :-/
ReplyDeleteI remember having good luck with the Pantene 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner when I was a teenager, and I came across a couple sample packets in the depths of bathroom storage recently-- decided to give it another try and see if it helped. The conditioner is great, although there is some truth to what people say about using the matching shampoo along with it, so I guess I'll have to fork out for both now :-/ It's worth it for manageable hair, though!
